Internship Opportunities
Gideon Internship
People suffer when they are unrepresented (or underrepresented) in court. The purpose of the Gideon Internship is to investigate, document, and inform the public about these injustices in the Austin community. The focus is the Travis County jail reduction docket, the local Title IV-D (child support) court, and Justice of the Peace eviction dockets.
You will attend court dockets to observe and document the proceedings, research applicable law, interview select attorneys and parties, and research best practices. You may assist in media outreach, human rights complaints, or litigation.
Education Justice Internship
Public education is the cornerstone of democracy and opportunity. The purpose of the Education Justice Internship is to investigate, document, and inform the public about injustices in public education.
You will research data from local school districts and charter schools related to racial/ethnic segregation, economic segregation, disparities in discipline, disparities in campus funding, and educational outcomes. You will also research case law on the Texas Education Code, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, the Fourteenth Amendment. You may assist in media outreach, human rights complaints, or litigation.
Housing Justice Internship
Racial and economic segregation perpetuate generational poverty and injustice. The purpose of the Housing Justice Internship is to pursue litigation and policy advocacy strategies to break down the historical legacy of segregation in Austin.
You will research state and local practices that impose housing burdens in Austin and help develop legal strategies for challenging those practices under the Fair Housing Act and other applicable laws. You may assist in media outreach, human rights complaints, or litigation.
