The verdict was an important victory, but only a partial one. It showed the police were not policing themselves. When we filed this lawsuit, APD's Internal Affairs Division had already "exonerated" these officers. The verdict shows the City's internal system for accountability was inadequate.
We need to keep pressing for truly independent systems of oversight and accountability for police misconduct. True change will require policy advocacy at every level of government. We must continue to press our local, state, and federal governments for something better, more fair, and more just.
